Guwahati: The Gateway to the Northeast
Almost every North East India journey begins here, and most travellers make the same mistake — they treat Guwahati as an airport with a hotel attached, landing at night and leaving for Shillong or Kaziranga by morning.
Give it two days instead.
Assam's largest city sprawls along the south bank of the Brahmaputra, a river so vast here that in the monsoon the far shore simply disappears into haze. Guwahati is old — mentioned in the epics as Pragjyotishpura, the City of Eastern Light — and it wears that age lightly, in hilltop shrines, a river full of islands, and a market culture that starts before dawn. It is also the region's practical hub: the busiest airport in the Northeast, its main railhead, and the point from which nearly every itinerary radiates.
- Kamakhya Temple — One of India's most significant Shakti Peethas and a major centre of Tantric worship, crowning Nilachal Hill with the whole valley below. Its distinctive beehive-shaped Nilachal-style dome dates to a 16th-century reconstruction over far older foundations. Go early; the hill road congests by mid-morning.
- The Brahmaputra at sunset — Non-negotiable. Take a river cruise from Fancy Bazar or ride the Brahmaputra ropeway to North Guwahati, among the longest river ropeways in India. The light around 5 pm does all the work.
- Umananda Island — A small Shiva temple on Peacock Island mid-river, reached by ferry from Kachari Ghat. One of the smallest inhabited river islands in the world.
- Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary — About 50 km east, with the highest density of one-horned rhinos anywhere on Earth. An excellent half-day trip and a useful fallback when Kaziranga is closed.
- Fancy Bazar and Paltan Bazar — Assam silk (muga, pat, eri), bell-metal work, bamboo craft and single-estate tea, in markets that locals actually use.
- Assam State Museum, Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Basistha Ashram — An hour each, and the fastest route into Assamese art, archaeology and performing arts.
- Deepor Beel — A Ramsar wetland on the city's edge and a genuinely good winter birding morning.
- The launchpad advantage — Shillong, Kaziranga, Majuli and the Arunachal road all begin from here.
